Who We Are

Kinship-45.jpg

MICHAELA GEYTENBEEK

Founding Directress

Hi there, I'm Michaela: a barefoot environmentalist with a passion for child development. I grew up building forts, racing snails and helping at my mum's Montessori PreSchool. After school I completed a Montessori teaching diploma, Engineering degree and Postgraduate in Sustainable Development. I also found hiking. Being fully immersed in nature had a profound effect on me and I came to believe that everyone should be able to experience the majesty of the mountains, the all-consuming rationality of how small we are, and yet, capable. As a result I founded PathFinders_SA and have been lucky to witness the incredible effect that nature has had on many others. I am exceptionally concerned about the lack of access that our children have to wild nature and the effect that this may have on their development. As a result I am currently studying the possibilities of integrating nature in the education curriculum. I also have a level 3 first aid qualification and am a mountain guide.

TATUM HOLDER

Kin Cottage Directress

Hello! My name is Tatum! You can often find me in nature surfing in the ocean, sun kissed on the warm sandy beaches or playing my ukulele tunes. After growing up in a Montessori environment and having my mum being a Montessorian, owning her own school, a deep love and passion for the Montessori Method and approach ignited. This inspired me to study and qualify in Montessori directress for ages 3-6 and 6- 12. On top of Montessori, I am also an active Specialised Kinesiologist, aspiring part time musician and have a certificate in Level 3 First Aid. I have had teaching experience teaching in schools, overseas as well as having a passion in working with special needs children. During the pandemic in 2020, I started a little homeschool tutoring group which lead me along a journey to where I am today, running Kin Cottage alongside Michaela.

I believe that when we educate the WHOLE child and give them every opportunity to understand their individual uniqueness, value and purpose here on Earth. With a love of nature and appreciation of the world around them; our children will be able to create a grounded, passionate, more loving, righteous, healthier and more peaceful society.

CHARLENE POTGIETER

Programme Directress: Durban North

Hello, my name is Charlene, and I am a nature-loving Environmentalist with a passion for the rehabilitation of our natural environment. With an Honours degree in Geography & Environmental studies, I hope to share my love and passion with children.
Despite living in an urban area I have grown up seeking adventure and nature. I have come to notice the green areas sprinkled amongst the urban sprawl and am dedicated to protecting and enhancing them. Volunteering with C.R.O.W. and EnviroFixers, I have learned more about our natural world and have come to realize both the importance of being outside and the impact that using my hands has had on enhancing my creativity and imagination. I hope to plant a seed that will help your child grow in life with a conscious mindset focused on our beautiful, natural environment.

“The garden of the world has no limits, except in your mind.” - Rumi

Some people are here to paint the most brilliant of pictures, others to climb the highest of mountains, some are born to be scientists, explorers or mothers.

Some days I wake up and feel like being a bit of all of these and some days it is something completely different – and so I came up with the perfect recipe... I would be a storyteller, the best storyteller I could possibly be.

My diverse imagination has guided me into the most colourful aspects of my personality, capabilities and interests – constantly showing me how wide this world really is. Perhaps that is why I chose the name Skye... here to live without borders.
And so, I allow the intelligence of Earth to be my teacher so that I may master the garden of my mind.

My focus is to cultivate tools of imagination using them as emotional compasses to mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. As I walk this path, I hope to share this with as many precious people as possible, reinventing the potential for creative minds in today's world.

BEN CARNIE

Programme Mentor

Howzit, I’m Ben
– JUST Ben; no jamin! I delight in the fact that I’m still largely a child with a strong love of Star Wars, expressive character, and desire for boundless adventure. I grew up playing in my garden and  enjoying family holidays in the Transkei and Drakensberg. This was when the wild became home.
Four years ago, I came to see the privilege that educators have: walking alongside parents with the joy and responsibility of nurturing a child and discovering their characters and personalities. This led me to study my Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching. I also have a specific passion for “special needs”, for the lack of a better term. As the son of an environmental journalist, my dad instilled in me a respect for the world and her wellbeing. I believe that an individual who knows their own value is best empowered to protect that which is valuable to them. Kinship for me comes as an opportunity to walk a journey of discovering alongside our little humans, unlocking the wonder of our environment and strengthening our relationship with her- in a hope that this relationship informs our future choices.

JOSH BARTHOLOMEW

Programme Facilitator: Durban North

Hi I’m Josh ...

I grew up as an only child in suburbia until the age of 12. My memories of this time are comprise of tree-climbing, beach days and playing sport with my cousins and friends. We were always outside! My family made an effort to travel away from the city so that we could experience nature on a deeper level. This has instilled a desire in me to be outside: Everyday I venture out as I feel I need to keep in contact with nature as it's a free gift that we as a human race have been given.

By observing my younger sister and cousins I have come to notice the marked effect that technology has on the younger generation and am passion about encouraging them to be outside and connect with nature. These three little humans have also made me realise that I love working with children. Being with them and helping them is heart warming and when you create a bond with a child there is no better feeling in the world.

I hope that I can help your child grow into a person that is kind and loving to people and nature.

My name is Nelly. I was born and bred in a small township, Kwamashu

KATHY MURRAY

Programme Facilitator: Durban North

Hi there, I'm Kathy: a qualified Montessori Directress with a passion for creating learning opportunities in daily life. I have 20 years experience in the field of teaching, facilitating, training and development. Six of which I spent working for Plymouth City Council and Barnados Children's Charity in the U.K. During this time I was inspired by the novel innovations and progress of the Early Childhood field. Mother Nature has been my guiding light since I was a young child and I have always used her as my moral compass when working with both children and adults. I am a mother of two and have raised my children with a love of the outdoors and have had the opportunity to watch them thrive as a result of this. I am grateful for the opportunity to spend time learning with and from your children as they embark on their Kinship Programme adventure.

“Nature dwells in both directions, not just outside us. Our inner world is also nature. Our minds and bodies are manifestations of the evolution of the living earth.” Micah from Rewilding.

Hi, I'm Carey. I am a mom of two beautiful boys, and it is their futures that makes me so excited to join Kinship. The urgent desire I have for them and all children to discover the wonder and wisdom of our earth as I did at their age, is what motivates me.

I have been teaching yoga for over 10 years and am a qualified Mindfulness facilitator. I hope to apply these two practices (yoga and mindfulness) alongside my love and reverence for wild and free spaces, to help nurture our future decision makers into wise and compassionate nature lovers.
